Abstract

496,191. Order-telegraph apparatus. BLACHE, H. H., and REBBECK, F. E. June 7, 1938, No. 16822. [Class 118 (ii)] The pointer of an engine room telegraph is movable over the same dial as a pointer operated by the manoeuvring gear of a reversible internal-combustion engine for ships, the manoeuvring gear being of the type wherein movement of a hand wheel or lever in one direction or the other from a central stop position successively actuates a reversing gear, starts the engines on compressed air and then admits fuel and at the same time cuts out the starting gear. The order telegraph transmitter comprises a wheel having a number of handles b the main handle bl of which carries a spring-loaded locking grip co-operating with a notched locking sector c. The wheel carries a pointer d which co-operates with a dial having the necessary orders for " Ahead " and " Astern. " As shown the movements of the wheel are transmitted to the receiver in the engine room by mechanical shafting f<3> but any known method of transmission, e.g. hydraulic or electric may be employed. Fig. 4 shows the combined order telegraph and manoeuvring control gear for use in the engine room. The transmission shaft f<3> operates through bevel gears m<1>, m<2> an order telegraph pointer m<4> over a dial k<1> carrying orders similar to those shown in Fig. 1. The manoeuvring gear comprises a wheel w which carries a pointer k movable over the same dial k<1>, the arrangement being such that the pointer k must be aligned with the pointer m<4> in order to comply with the order transmitted. The main handle h<1> of the wheel w is provided with a spring locking grip h<2> which co-operates with a locking sector i. The wheel w is mounted on a shaft l<1> which effects the various engine controls, including that of the reversing gear, by a cam l and push rod l<5>, which is operable into either of two positions corresponding to " Ahead " and "Astern." When the wheel is moved into a " Reverse " position the wheel is automatically locked until the reversing gear is fully operated. The rod l<5> controls contacts l<7>, l<8> which are connected to indicator lamps g<3>, g' on the bridge and engine room telegraphs. Revolution direction and counter indicators may also be provided on the telegraphs. The manoeuvring gear may be operated from the bridge telegraph by the provision of a manually-operated pin o<2>, which couples the wheel w with a disc m<3> carrying the order telegraph pointer. The pin o<2> is normally locked in the withdrawn position by a pin o' riding in a right-angled slot p<2> in the pin o<2>, but is engageable under the force of a spring o<5> in the hole o<3>, when the pointers are in alignment, by turning the pin through 90‹ by the handle o<6>. A cam p' operates a spring- controlled rod p<6> to unlock the wheel w when the gear is adapted for operation from the bridge. The pin o<2> controls a switch n, n<1>, n<2> which operates indicator lamps g<1>, g<2>.
