Abstract
107,671. Bullivant, F. A., and Barge, H. L. July 24, 1916. Pipe and rod cutters.-An apparatus specially intended for cutting wire ropes, comprises a fixed cutter on a suitable base and a sliding cutter operated by a cam, rotatable in one direction only, so formed that the movement of the cutter is slowed down as it completes the cut, and it is then returned rapidly. The cam is preferably rotated by ratchet mechanism. As shown, the fixed cutter B is secured by a pin b in a socket in the base A, and the movable cutter D is secured by a pin d in a slide C having an anti-friction roller F held in engagement with the cam G by a returning-spring J. The cam is formed so as to reduce the speed of the cutter-slide as the cut proceeds, and the recess g<2> produces a quick return. On the shaft g of the cam is a ratchet-wheel H engaged by a pawl i on the lever I and by a retaining-pawl h. The lever I is long enough to give the required leverage, or it may be geared up to give greater power.
