Abstract

495,980. Handling transferable loadcontainers. TENNANT, W. J. (Motor Terminals, Inc.) June 18, 1937, No. 17060. [Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A freight-handling system comprises a demountable container having a pair of skid rails on the bottom and hoist attaching devices at the eaves and a road vehicle provided with propelling mechanism which may be attached to the container to move it horizontally on or off corresponding guide rails on the vehicle, the hoist attaching devices providing means for a lifting device whereby the container may be raised or lowered from the vehicle. As shown, the removable body, Fig. 1, comprises hinged side doors 30, tail gates 50 and roof door 70 accessible by rungs 85 on a door locking post 130 and by a transverse roof platform 80. Skid rails 100 are provided at the bottom of the container and a band 60, attached to the upper ends of the side and end walls, is provided with hooks 61, the side walls being supported by transverse roof beams. The floor comprises longitudinal beams 11, Fig. 10, recessed to receive cross beams 17 supporting floor'planks 90 covered by plates 92. The hinged side doors 30 abut against inwardly flanged plates around the doorway and are locked by the vertical post 130, the upper end of which is inserted into a channel 35 and the lower end bolted to a seating 36. The post 130, Fig. 5, is provided with opposed angles 131 which engage the flanged edges 32 of channels 31 on the doors in the locked position. The rungs 85 of the ladder are secured at the centre to the locking post 130 and have upturned ends 86, 87. The end gates 50, Fig. 4, are pivoted on a bar 54 protected by an offset plate 42, the gate being enclosed in a channel 55 having one side lipped at 56 to form sealing means when closed, the gate being locked by a sliding bolt 150. The roof door 70, Fig. 6, comprises a frame 112 hinged at 116 and recessed to engage the upwardly turned ends of plates 72, 74 which are bent to receive the edges of corrugated roof plates 62, the plates being secured together by transverse tubular members 68, 69 which engage above and below the troughs of the corrugations. The container may be raised by the hooks 61 by a gantry crane and deposited on another vehicle or a vehicle may be provided with hinged rails which engage with the runners 100 and are adapted to be raised by hydraulic means on the vehicle to tip the container for discharge of the contents through the end gate. The container B, Fig. 13, may be transferred horizontally from one vehicle to another by means of bridge bars D connecting the two vehicles and parallel endless chains F mounted in channels alongside the skid rails E and driven by a motor G on the vehicle, push-pull bars H being connected to the chassis and container. Hooks 105, Fig. 4, are provided for securing the container on the vehicle and when several containers are mounted on a vehicle the platforms 80 provide a continuous gangway from one end of the vehicle to the other. Specification 474,362 is referred to.
