Abstract
495,794. Centrifugal separators. FASTING, J. S. May 20, 1937, No. 14097. [Class 23] Raw slurry is divided by applying it in a thin layer to the outer surface of a rotating drum, or other body of revolution, so that particles are flung off at different stages of the revolution and collected separately. The drum 1a may rotate on a horizontal axis, and the slurry fed on to its upper part, or as shown in the Figure the slurry is fed through a pipe 3a to the casing 2a and the rotating drum dips in it. The first particles detached from the drum are flung to the trough 4a and discharge pipe 6a, while the next are thrown to the casing and slide down the shoot 7a, 8a. The remainder collects in the bottom of the casing in increasing concentration. An agitator 10a keeps this mixture uniform along the drum and a valve 9a provides for its discharge. A number of these separators may be provided in series so that the separated heavy portion passes from one to the next. Substances, such as oil, may be added to the slurry to increase the adhesion of some of the particles to the rotating body.
