Abstract

Resilient pressed articles are moulded from a loose fibrous felt, e.g. of prepared cotton or cellulose, upon the fibres of which is distributed a finely-distributed, heat-hardenable binder. The binder may be distributed upon the fibre during working up into felt by dispersion in water and deposition upon sieves. The cellulose fibres may be mercerized to increase length. Specified binders are phenol, cresol and urea resins. Fillers and mould lubricants, e.g. infusorial earth, china clay, talcum, mica, asbestos, catalysts and colouring matters may also be incorporated. The raw material may be compressed and may be shredded by tearing. Laminated articles may be produced by folding or stacking plates of the material, preferably roughened by scratching rollers. The sheets of raw material may be printed in colour. Different portions of the felt may contain different binders, or different layers may be combined. The articles may be moulded with metal inserts.
