Abstract

539,706. Moulded paper pulp. FEDERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Feb. 6, 1940, No. 2293. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1939. [Class 96] [Also in Group V] Gramophone turntables, protective guards, trays, sheet materials &c. are moulded from fibrous pulps, e.g. paper stock by mixing the felted fibres with a binder comprising the complex resinous material remaining after pine wood pitch has been extracted to remove turpentine, resin &c. The melting point of the pitch extract may be raised by forming a condensation product therefrom as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,115,496 or by adding metal oxides or hydroxides, e.g. zinc oxide. The mixture is preferably defiberised in known manner by beating in a Hollander to which the binder and a wetting or dispersing agent is added. A mixture comprising 14 lbs. kraft cuttings, 18 lbs. formaldehyde-hardened pitch extract, 11¢ ozs. Paris Black &c. is specified and is adjusted to a Ph of 4.5 by addition of alum. The mixture is built up to the required form by immersing a bell-shaped vessel 18 supporting a wire-mesh screen 20 in the pulp solution contained in a vessel 10 and applying suction through a conduit 16 to draw the fibres through the screen and deposit the fibres thereon. The built-up shell is then removed, dried and moulded between dies 24, 26 which may be heated, e.g. to, 300-315‹F. at 1500-2000 lbs. per sq. inch pressure.
