Abstract
502,409. Moulding synthetic resin. PHILIPPE, C. D., and BAKELITE, Ltd. Sept. 11, 1937, No. 24805. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII and IV] A material suitable for making moulded products comprises a sliver or slivers of cotton, wool, flax or asbestos impregnated with a heathardenable synthetic resin, e.g. a phenol-aldehyde resin made with a basic catalyst or containing hexamethylene tetramine, urea-formaldehyde or alkyd resin. The impregnating material may be an ethyl alcohol solution of a resin made from cresol and formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia or an aqueous phenol-formaldehyde initial condensation product. Sheets comprising impregnated slivers flattened to ribbon form and united edge to edge are cut to shape, superposed so that all the fibres lie in the same direction or so that the fibres in alternate layers are at rightangles or in different directions in different layers, and subjected to heat and pressure. The impregnated slivers may be used as reinforcement for laminated materials made from impregnated woven textiles or sheets of paper, or for mouldings made from moulding powders, e.g. spinning buckets for artificial silk. In making airscrew blades sheets of the impregnated slivers are cut to the shape shown in Fig. 4, where 9 is a curve showing the variation in cross-sectional area of the blade along its length. Each sheet is rolled up about edge 10 and a sufficient number of rolls are placed in half moulds and pressed without heating sufficiently to harden the resin. The two halves are then moulded together under heat and pressure. The root of the blade may be strengthened by curving the ends of the sheets outwardly as shown in Fig. 5. The cavity 11 may be filled with waste pieces to provide a solid end.
