Abstract

495,441. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 11, 1937, No. 13389. Convention date, May 11, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In. X-ray apparatus of the kind comprising a rotating anode 3, Fig. 3, and a cathode with a number of alternative linear filaments 28, 33, the anode has a peripherally extending target surface 18 inclined away from the cathode structure and the filaments and their focusing means are arranged side by side in the cathode structure approximately radially to the axis of rotation of the anode, the focusing means being so arranged as to cause the beams to converge to closely adjacent substantially parallel focal lines on the target. Preferably, to ensure parallelism of the focal lines, the filaments are slightly convergent in the direction of the axis of rotation of the anode as shown in Fig. 4. The alternative filaments are of different sizes to produce beams of different intensities. Preferably, provision is made for forming a beam which is of greater intensity on the side first entered by the moving target than on the leaving side. For this purpose, the focusing cup is provided with recesses in which the metal surrounding the recesses is unsymmetrically disposed with respect to the filaments. Alternatively, a symmetrical focusing cup may be used with an unsymmetrically disposed filament or with two unequal filaments disposed on opposite sides of the symmetrical plane of the recesses. The invention is described as applied to apparatus as described in Specifications 495,435 and 495,440. Specification 424,822 also is referred to.
