Abstract

A polyvinyl alcohol or a partial ester, ether or acetal thereof which dissolves or swells in water is used to unite materials containing cellulose or a hydrophilic derivative thereof to the same or other materials. The adhesive may be used as an aqueous solution or paste, or in solution in an organic solvent, and a filler, e.g. zinc white, whiting, wood meal, heavy spar, kaolin or starch, an organicsolvent, e.g. glycerine, glycol, formamide, phenol or glacial acetic acid, another adhesive, e.g. glue, casein, starch or dextrin, and a viscosity-modifying agent, e.g. borax, salt or sugar, may be added. The cellulose materials may be wood, cardboard, paper, cotton, fabric, viscose or acetylcellulose, and these may be united to metals, e.g. aluminium, brass or iron, or the material known under the Registered Trade Mark " Galalith " or to each other.
