Abstract

A water-insoluble transparent or translucent normally tacky and pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises resin, for example rosin, synthetic resins such as Cumaron resin, or gum resins, rubber and a plasticizer such as liquid paraffin, the resin-rubber ratio lying between the limits 1 : 2 and 2 : 1. A similar, but normally dry, solvent-activated adhesive contains resin and rubber in the proportions 1.4 to 6 parts resin to 1 part rubber, but no plasticizer, although hide glue, corn-starch or dextrin may be added Fillers such as zinc oxide, dyes and pigments may also be added. The rubber component may be latex crepe, smoked sheet or reclaim and is preferably plasticized by milling before adding the resin. The resin and rubber may be incorporated in a mixer and dissolved in a solvent such as benzol or the components may be separately dissolved and then mixed. The glue &c. is added in aqueous solution to the rubber-resin solution in benzol to form an emulsion in which the rubber solution constitutes the continuous phase. The adhesive may be applied in solution to backings of paper, especially Kraft paper, cardboard, or gelatinized cellulosic derivatives as described in Specification 405,247. The paper may be pretreated by impregnation with glue. The adhesive paper may be made up into corrugated boards.
