Abstract

494,247. Thermostatic mixing - valves. SADLER, A. T. (Leonard-Rooke Co.) April 23, 1937, No. 11620. [Class 135] In a thermostatic mixing device in which the admission of the respective fluids to a mixing chamber is controlled by a valve adjusted by a thermostatic coil, the inner end of the coil 35 is coupled to a rotatable sleeve 46 having an eccentric pin or finger 48 engaging a unitary valve body 32, having parts which control the different fluid streams to vary the proportions of each fluid. The form shown comprises two flanged casing members 10, 11 connected by bolts 15 to form a housing for the coil 35. The outer end of the latter is anchored to an arm 43 fixed on a shaft 36 which carries a handle 49 and a pointer 50. The pin 48 is carried by a crank arm 47 on the sleeve 46 and engages an annular groove 34 in the valve body 32 which is of double conical form. The latter slides on a ported tube 28 communicating directly with the inlets 16, 17 for the hot and cold fluids. These inlets respectively open into chambers 20, 21, which contain filters 22, 23 removable by unscrewing caps 24, 25. The tube 28 has a central partition 29 and seats in recessed threaded nipples 24a, 25a. The tube 28 has three radial ports 30, Fig. 6, for the cold fluid and only two, 31, for the hot fluid, all of which are arranged to direct the inflowing streams away from the coil 35 to facilitate thorough mixing before the fluids reach the coil. The shape of the valve is stated to have the same effect. A partition 52 separates the outlet chamber 51 from the valve chamber. In a modification, the double conical member 32 is not formed as the valve but is rigidly connected to two piston valves. In this case stationary deflectors may be mounted about the stems of the piston valves to deflect fluid away from the conical body.
