Abstract

Games balls such as golf balls are formed as to the outer portion at least, of a nonaqueous mixture of guttapercha or balata and a polymerized vinyl or substituted vinyl compound, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polymerized vinyl or a -methylvinyl cyanide, polystyrene, or polymerized esters of acrylic acid. The constituents may be milled together in plasticized or powdered condition and some or all may be in the form of a dough or solution. Pigments and fillers such as titanium, magnesium, or zinc oxide, and wood flour, may be added. The outer surface may be hardened locally or uniformly by heat-treatment, vulcanization, treatment with chlorine, formaldehyde, or acids of the sulphonic group, e.g. sulphuric acid.ALSO:Games balls such as golf balls are formed as to the outer portion at least, of a non-aqueous mixture of guttapercha or balata and a polymerized vinyl compound or substituted vinyl compound, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polymerized vinyl or a -methylvinyl cyanide, polystyrene, polymerized esters of acrylic acid, polymerized butadiene or a -chlor-butadiene. The constituents may be milled together in plasticized or powdered condition and some or all may be in the form of a dough or solution. Sulphur, pigments and fillers such as titanium, magnesium, or zinc oxide, and wood flour, may be added. The outer surface may be hardened locally or uniformly by heat-treatment, vulcanization, treatment with chlorine, formaldehyde, or acids of the sulphonic group, e.g. sulphuric acid.
