[Class 146 (i)] In a loose-leaf binder comprising clamping- bars 3, 4, Fig. 1, to which the covers 26 and a back member 14 are hinged and one of which carries mechanism for locking the ends of filing-pins carried by the other, the bars 3, 4 are formed with open-ended depressions 28 to receive hinge sockets 5, 6 on the covers, hinge pins being threaded through the sockets from the inside of the bars 3, 4. Similar depressions may be provided to receive hinge sockets 15 on the back-member 14. Each bar 3, 4 is formed of approximately D-section of sufficient depth to receive the post-locking mechanism or the post-carrying bar 25. The depressions 28 are formed by cutting slits in the sides of the bars and pressing inwardly the material between the slits. They also serve to secure the bar 25 in place. Cover plates 1, 2 carrying the covers 26 and integral with the sockets 5, 6 are bent inwardly at 13 so that the cover can be opened to the position shown at 27. Plugs of rubber, artificial resin, or fibre may be inserted in the open ends of the bars 3, 4 to prevent damage to table surfaces when the binder is placed thereon. The back 14 has a strip 19, Fig. 5, of flexible material disposed between strengthening ridges 22 thereon and secured by members 36 with tongues 24 threaded through slots 23 in the strip 19 and back 14. A further strip 20 of an ornamental character or imprinted with letters may be secured by adhesive to the strip 19. The members 36 may be replaced by a single member extending the length of the back and the strips 19, 20 may be replaced by a strip of stiff cardboard covered with leather.
