Abstract
340,491. Visible card indexes. POWER, R. F., 18, Chesterford Gardens, Hampstead, London. Sept. 28, 1929. Nos. 29455/29 and 13606/30. [Class 146 (i).] A strip 1, Fig. 2, which may be an index strip or may form a support for an index card in a visible card index, is provided with a number of T, L, or equivalentlyshaped lugs of which one or more project from each edge so as to engage slots in a backing member. The slots 21 .. 25 may be formed in a sheet 20, the lugs 2, 3, 6 on the upper edge engaging the slots 21, 23, 25 and those 10, 11 on the lower edge engaging the slots 22, 24, thus preventing one strip overlapping adjacent strips. If desired, the sheet 20 may be attached to a backing sheet which is adapted to be bound in a book or loose-leaf binder or may be part of an endless band passing over rollers. In another construction, the slots are formed by ribbons stretched across rectangular frames hinged together similarly to covers, the frames being recessed so that the fingers may be inserted beneath the ribbons to insert or remove a card. A frame may be provided with slots on each face and mounted as a leaf between book covers. In a further construction, Fig. 19, the ribbons are attached at their ends to strips 78, 79 clamped between wood blocks 80, 81 arranged at the fold 82 of covermembers 76. Tongues 75 are struck-up out of the material of the covers 76 and are attached to the ribbons intermediate their ends so as to support them above the surface of the covers, the tongues being adapted to fall back into their original positions when the covers are closed and the ribbons lie along the covers. In a modified form of this construction in which the covers are made of metal, the strips 78, 79 are replaced by rods hinged together about an axis raised above the cover surface and the tongues 75 are replaced by hinged crank-members. The strips 1 may have widths corresponding to one or more lines of index matter, or may be formed integral with, or attached to, or adapted to carry an index card of a visible index. In the latter case the tongues are passed through slots in the card. Where the card is a double one 44, 45, Fig. 11, the tongues 2, 3, 6 are threaded through slots in the fold, and the tongues 10, 11 are threaded through slots 46 in the under sheet 45. The under sheet 45 may be only a narrow strip. The dimensions of the sheet or endless band 20, Fig. 2, and of the strips 1 are such that the sheet or band can be passed through a typewriter and the index matter printed on the strips. Further, the strips may be made as a series, Fig. 12, either in sheet or endless band form by stamping perforations from a sheet or web of paper and leaving the strips. connected by easily broken pieces 53 .. 55, the widths being arranged as before so that the index matter can be printed in a typewriter.
