[Classes 29 and 64 (ii)] In a heat-insulating element comprising a double-walled hermetically closed container, preferably for insertion between the usual inner and outer walls of a refrigerator cabinet, direct heat conduction between the walls 2, 3 of the element through the front closure member 4 is reduced by interposing thin strips 5 of poor heat-conducting metal, such as nickel-iron alloy, between the foreshortened inner wall of the element and the frame, the joints between the various members being spot or roller welded. The frame 4 is cut out from a metal sheet in the form of a single strip with rounded corners and is preferably provided with flanged edges to facilitate welding. After filling the element with a fine powder, such as kieselguhr, air may be evacuated therefrom by connecting a socket 8, housed in an indentation 7 in the outer wall of the element, to a vacuum pump. In position in a refrigerator cabinet, rubber packing is inserted between the element and the walls of the cabinet.
