Abstract
725,546. Refrigerators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 11, 1953 [Dec. 11, 1952], No. 34579/53. Class 29. In a refrigerator wall (Fig. 2) or closure (Fig. 4) insulated by evacuated panels as described in Specification 715,174, the inner wall 5 of the panel (Fig. 2) is flanged inwardly at 9, a breaker strip 8 of material of low thermal conductivity, e.g. stainless steel, is welded to the flange 9 at 10 and to the outer wall 4 and a trim strip 22 is screwed at one end to the end 18 of flange 9 and at the other end is held in a clip 24 screwed to and held by an extension 15, 16, 23 of the outer wall 4. The extension 15 also carries the door hinge 3, the door 2 comprising outer and inner walls 11, 12 bridged by a trim strip 26 screwed at one end to a bracket 30 welded to the wall 12 and at the other end to an extension 19 of the other wall 11. Extension 19 also carries a sealing gasket 17 and the hinge 3. The inner wall 12 may comprise. a sheet of stainless steel as shown or may comprise a central portion of low carbon steel, a breaker strip similar to the strip 8 being welded to this portion and to the outer wall 11. The breaker strips and the peripheral portion of the wall 12 may be of reduced thickness and corrugated to reduce heat transfer, Fig. 3 (not shown). The spaces behind the trim strips 22, 26 may contain insulation. In a top-access cabinet (Fig. 4), the lid 44 comprises an evacuated panel, the inner wall 70 of which is flanged at 71 and connected to the outer wall 69 by a breaker strip 72. Outer wall 69 is extended in the shape shown to carry a hinge (not shown) and to coact with a gasket 61. Its terminal part 79 carries a trim strip 80 which also embraces the edge of flange 71. The evacuated panel of the wall comprises inner and outer walls 46, 47 bridged by a breaker strip 52. A further outer wall 49 has a flange 58 carrying the gasket 61 and a bracket 59 to which the panel is screwed. It has a further terminal flange 63 which is connected to an extension 66 of the inner wall 46 by a trim strip 62. An extended air space 51 is left between the trim strips 62, 80. The breaker strips 52, 72 may be of reduced thickness and corrugated.
