In a refrigerator having insulation composed of an evacuated panel 8 as described in Specification 715,174, lying between inner and outer walls, heat leakage at the panel edges is prevented by associating therewith a batt of atmospheric insulation of greater thickness than that of the panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the top and sides of the cabinet contain the panels 8 and the top corners of the inner liner 3 are bevelled at 15 to provide an enlarged space for the reception around the panel edges of a batt of insulation 16. As shown in Fig. 2, the back of the cabinet contains atmospheric insulation 18 but this may be replaced by a panel 8 in which case the rear corners of the liner 3 are also bevelled. A breaker strip 7a bridges the outer and inner shells 2, 3. The panels 8 are spaced from the walls 2, 3 by cardboard strips 10. The door 6, Fig. 2, comprises a panel 8 and inner and outer walls 26, 24 both being of pan shaped form to allow the insertion of a batt 35 of insulation around the panel edges and to allow the mounting of shelves on the inner side of the door. A breaker strip 27 joins the walls 24, 26. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the inner wall and breaker strip of the door are made in one piece of heat insulating material. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the inner wall 39 of the door has the shape shown and is secured at its periphery by screws 43 to braces 40 secured to the outer wall, spacers 44 being provided. A U-shaped breaker strip 45 is provided.
