Abstract

492,294. Safety cut-off valves. HORSTMANN F. O., and HORSTMANN GEAR CO., Ltd. March 17, 1937, No. 7872. [Class 135] A thermally-actuated safety cut-off valve has a rotary spring loaded valve adapted to be held in the open position by a catch actuated by a U-shaped bi-metallic strip 1 supported between the main jets 2 and the pilot burner 3. The bi-metallic strip is supported by a tube 4 secured to a lug 5 on the valve casing and is coupled by a rod 8 slidable in the tube 4 to a pivoted catch 18. The catch has two retaining surfaces 20, 21, adapted to co-operate with diametrically opposed projections 16, 17 on a plate 15 secured to the plug of the cock. When the cock is opened by manipulating the handle 11 the projection 17 snaps behind the surface 20 to retain the cock in the open position. As the thermal strip warms up the catch is turned about the pivot 19 to release the projection 16. The projection 17 is shortly afterwards engaged by the surface 21 to retain the cock in the open position until such time as the thermal strip is cooled or the catch is released by a manually operated element. In a modification the end of the rod 8 itself acts as a catch. In this form the cock must be held open by hand until the strip has warmed up.
