Suppose," now, that the two valves not various movable parts associated therewith are in the positions contemplated by Figure 3, and that a sudden gust of wind ex tiuguishes the flame of the gas burner. The result is that the thermostatic bar 18 now ifltiiiit ly cools off, and in-so "doing actuates the locking bolt 15, so that tl'ieth'ermostatic bar and the locking bolt movefromthe positions indicated for them by dotted lines in Figure l to the positlons indicated for them by full lines in this figure. lhe locking-bolt 15 is thus drawn out ofengagementwith the lever 10, and the latter is by tension of the spring 12 rocked in a clockwise direction accordin to Figure 1, from the position indicatedby dotted lines to the position indicated for it byfull lines, in, this figure. Hence the flow of gas through the-jet pipe 6 is by action of the valve 8 cutoff abruptly,,the action 01": the valve being practically automatic.
As may be readily seen, therefore, whenever the device is properly arranged and the gas burner is in action, if the burner flame is extinguished by a sudden gust of wind of by any ordinary means in the nature of an accident, the flow of gas to the burner is cut off, abruptly and automatically.
The operation of my device may be readilyunderstood from the foregoing description.
In order to use the burner, the operator proceeds as follows: By turning the handle '9 into the position indicated for it in Figur.e 1,'the valve 7 is opened. The operator ,now grasps the lever 10, preferably using theportion 11 thereof as a handle, androcks this lever into the position indicated for it by dotted lines in Figure 1 Gas now [lows freely to the burner. The operator next lights'the gas flowing from the burner, and
meanwhile holds the lever 10 in the position indicated for it by dotted lines in Figure 1. The heat from the burner afiects the thermostatio bar 18 as above described, and by so doing causes the locking bolt 15 to be thrust partially in the path of thelever 10. The operator now releases this lever, which thereupon resses sidewise'upon the locking bolt 15 an is by this bolt prevented from turning.
The apparatus remainsin this condition for any length of time,- or in other; words, so long as the burner remains in action. As soon, however, as the burner flame is extinguished by a gust of wind or the like, the lever 10 is released 'as above described, and the valve 8 instantly stops the flow of gas to the burner.
Whenever the flow of gas is thus cut off the operator may as aprecaution grasp the handle 9, and by turningit place the valve 7 in such condition-that this valve alone would be sufiicient' to prevent the passage. of gas to the burner.
