Be it known that l, JOSEPH S. KRAKER, a citizen of Czecho-Slovakia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brookl n, in the county of Kings and State of ew York, have lnvented a new and limproved Controlling Device for Gas Jets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to controlling devices for burners and is particularly designed for use in connection with gas jets or gas stoves.
It is a well known fact that many serious and fatal accidents have resulted from the accidental extinguishin of the flame of gas jets, in that when the ame is blown out or for some reason the pressure is cut off and turned on again without-the knowledge of the occupants of a building in which the gas jet is arranged.
Tt is therefore one of the principal objects of the present invention to provide means for cutting ofi' the flow of fuel to a burner upon the accidental extinction of the flame. I
Another object of the present invention is to provide a heat controlled magnetically operative means for accomplishing the purpose in view which is purely automatic in its operation and which is in the nature of an attachment applicable to'any standard or stove now on the market.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, and efficient in the purpose for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in view, which will be more readily apparent as the nature, purpose, and o eration are better lowing description and claims, reference is made to the accompanymg drawings also forming a part of this application and in which,

it has been proven by actual test and exeriment that a, metallic member when eated to a cherry red Wi l not be influenced by magnetic forces and this constitutes one of the fundamental and basic principles upon which the present invention operates.
lln carrying the invention into practice a conventional form of a gas jet is illustrated at and is provided with the usual controlling key 11. The attachment comprises a tubular member or a pipe section 12 which is interiorly threaded as at 13 for the reception of the threaded nipple 14 of the jet. The opposite end of the member 12 is open and adapted to receive the usual burner tip 15 whereby communication is established between-the jet 10 and the tip. Arranged in the member 12 is a rotary valve 16 which is operable to permit the gas or other fuel to flow therethrough when shifted to one position and serves to cut off the flow of gas when shifted to the other position. A valve arm 17 is connected to the valve for shifting the same to its open and closed positions and a spring 18 having one terminal connected as at 19 to the member 12 and the opposite terminal 20 in engagement with the' arm 17 serves to normally shift the valve to a closed position. The valve 16 is provided with a pin 21 and a pivoted catch 22 is mounted on the member 12 and designed to engage the pin 21 for retaining the valve in an open position, a leaf spring 23 serving to maintain the catch in engagement with the pin 21. The means for releasing the catch 22 upon extinction of the flame-comprises a gravity operated weight 24 slidable in a housing 25 attached to the member 12. A lever 26 is pivoted to the member 12 adjacent the housing and is rovided at one extremity with a retaining nger 27, the opposite extremity 28 extends upwardly adjacent the burner tip for a purpose to be hereafter described. A magnet 29 supported by a bracket 30 secured to the housing 25 is arranged with its poles toward the burner tip and preferably in alignment with the extremity 28 of the lever 26. As illustrated the weight'24=-is notched as at 31 and the upper extremitythereof is provided with a reduced extension 32 having an ofi'set curved extremity 33-slidable in theslotted portion 34L of the housing. An aperture 35 is provided in the housing adjacent the retaining finger27 and in alignment therewith whereby upon movement of the lever in one direction the retaining finger 27 is permitted to enter said aperture, A flexible element 36 in the nature of a cord or chain, is provided and is secured to the upper end of the weight 24 and extends through the upper end of the housing and through an opening 37 in the bracket. A coil spring 38 embraces the cord 36 and is connected at one end to the bracket 30 and at its opposite end to the cord. The cord 36 is passed through an opening 39 in the extremity of the valve arm 17 and the free extremity of said cord is provided with a finger ring 40. An enlargement 411 is secured to or formed on the cord 36 adjacent the valve arm for a purpose hereafter described.
In use of the device presuming that the burner has been lighted to produce the flame 42, the extremity 28 of the lever is arranged therein as illustrated in Figure 1. Should the flame be extinguished for any reason the extremity 28 of the lever upon cooling will be attracted by the magnet 29 thereby disengaging the retaining finger 27 from the notch 31 in the weight; this permits the weight to gravitate and release the catch 22 from the pin 21 thereby allowing the spring 18 to shift the valve 16 to a closed position. When it is desired to again light the burner tip, the ring 40 is grasped by the operator and a downward pull exerted thereon which shifts the valve arm 17 by the engagement of the enlargement 41 with the apertured extremity 39, thereby opening the valve to permit the flow of gas therethrough to the burner tip. At the same time the downward pull on the cord 36 is exerted, the upper extremity of said cord will effect a lifting of the weight 24 moving the same upward in the housin 25 until the offset extremity 33 engages with the upper portion '28 of the lever 26, which engagement breaks the contact of the same with the magnet 29 and throws the same to a position where it will lie in the flame when the same is lighted, the opposite extremity will be moved inward simultaneously to engage the retaining finger 27 in the notch 31. The operator then lights the flame and continues to hold the cord down until the eitremity 28 is heated to a cherry red which prevents further influence of the ma net until the extremity has become cool. 1 Ie then releases the cord 36 which will be moved upward under the action of the spring 38 and the weight will move downwardly slightly to disengage the extremity 33 of the extension 32 from the ortion 28. The action of the spring 38 pro uces suflicient slack in the upper end of the cord to allow for the free gravitation of the weight 25 when released.
Vhile there has been illustrated and described a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is merely an illustration of one method of reducing the device to practice and variations and modifications which @111 within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a burner having a valved connection with a fuel supply. of a device for cutting off said supply upon extinction of the flame, comprising means for normally closing the valve, retaining means adapted to co-act with the valve to hold the same open, and means for releasing the same comprising a magnet, a weight, a latch for holding said weight against gravitation, a portion of said latch normally lying within the flame of said burner and heated thereby to destroy the action of the magnetic forces of said magnet thereupon, said portion functioning when cooled due to the extinction of the flame to be acted upon by said magnetic forces to release said weight as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a burner having a valved connection with a fuel supply, of a device for cutting off said fuel supply on extinction of the flame, comprising means for normally closing said valve, a latch for holding the same in an open position, a weight adapted to co-act with said latch for releasing same, a catch for holding the weight inactive, said catch having a portion lying in and adapted to be heated by the flame of the burner, and a magnet arranged adjacent said heated portion of the latch and adapted to throw the same to a non-holding position upon cooling of the heated portion when the flame is extinguished, said portion of the latch when heated serving to resist the magnetic forces of said magnet.
3. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a burner having a valved connection with a source of fuel supply, a spring functioning to normally close said valve, a latch for retaining the valve in open position, a weight for releasing said latch, means for holding said weight in superposed relation with respect to said latch, magnetic means for effecting movement of said holding means to a nonholding position, a portion of said holding means being normally disposed within the flame whereby the magnetic forces of said magnetic means will be ineffective.
4. A device of the character described comprising a tubular member adapted to receive a burner at one end and a fuel supply at its other end, a valve between said ends, a spring for closing said valve, a latch adapted to hold said valve open against the action of said spring. a housing superposed with relation to said latch, a weight slidable therein and adapted when released to disengage the latch from the valve, a magnet supported from said housing adjacent the burner, a pivoted member having a nose at one end adapted to engage and hold the weight against gravitation when its opposite extremity is arranged in and heated by the flame and adapted when the flame is extinguished to be attracted by said magnet todisengage the nose from the weight, and a common means for disengaging said opposite extremity from the mag net. lifting the weight and effecting the opening of the valve and its engagement with the lateh, as and for the purpose speci- 5.
