492,030. Electrophonetic treatment of rubber dispersions. SEMPERIT OESTERREICHISCH-AMERIKANISCHE GUMMIWERKE AKT.-GES. Jan. 11, 1937, Nos. 867 and 868. Convention dates, Jan. 11, 1936 and Feb. 20, 1936. [Class 41] [Also in Group V] Aqueous dispersions of rubber are purified and/or concentrated by subjecting them between diaphragms to an electric field under such conditions that stratification occurs and then separating the layer of higher rubber concentration from the other layer or layers ; low concentration of the dispersion, low potential difference, and periodical reversal of current all tend to produce stratification rather than electrodeposition. The process may be repeated. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown which comprises three cells 1, 2 and 3 separated from each other by diaphragms 4 of cellulose hydrate, parchment or the like ; the cell 1 contains the dispersion to be treated, e.g. ammoniacal latex, and the cells 2, 3 are filled with an ammonia solution of the same concentration as the ammonia in the latex and contain the electrodes 5, 6 respectively of steel, platinum or the like.
