Abstract

505,752. Electrophoretic treatment of colloidal dispersions. SEMPERIT OESTERREICHISCH - AMERIKANISCHE GUMMIWERKE AKT.-GES. Sept. 13, 1937, No. 24909. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1936. [Class 41] In a process for purifying, separating or concentrating colloidal dispersions by subjecting them between diaphragms to an electric field under such conditions that separation into horizontal layers occurs, the separation &c. is accelerated by introduction of one or more additional diaphragms between those separating off the electrode spaces. In the apparatus shown the space between the main diaphragms 4, 5 is divided by diaphragms 6 of cellulose hydrate or parchment into spaces which are in communication at the top and bottom. Fresh dispersion is admitted to the spaces by lateral inlet pipes 7. The total electric resistance of the diaphragms should be not greater than that of the dispersion. The individual intermediate diaphragms may be replaced by a single undulated diaphragm. Stratification is promoted by a low concentration of dispersion, by a low potential gradient or by periodical reversal of current. The dispersions are preferably first freed from electrolytes as far as possible e.g. by dialysis. Dispersions of pectin, gelatin, casein, dyestuffs, metal sols or of indiarubber may be treated. Specifications 492,030 and 505,753 are referred to.
