Abstract

491,833. Slicing bread &c. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. (Maatshcappij van Berkel's Patent N. V.) Feb. 1, 1938, No. 3101. [Class 5 (i)] A multi-knife slicing-machine comprises a bread table 11 provided with deep slots 12 and preferably made from a block of wood having strips of sheet aluminium covering the top and front and rear edges of the parts between the slots. The table is supported by a member 10 fixed to and extending transversely across the main frame. A bar 13 provided with upwardly extending tines 14, curved slightly rearwardly, is fitted at the rear of the table 11 and a bar 15 carrying tines 16 curved forwardly is arranged in front of the table. The tines 16 press lightly against the loaf to hold it against the tines 14 while it is being cut. The bar 15 is journalled in a pair of slidable members 17 carried by screw-threaded rods 18 which can be adjusted to position the tines 16 for the width of the loaves being cut by the attendant turning knobs 19. The tines may be adjusted angularly by turning the bar 15 in its journals and may be locked in adjusted position by a pin 21 in the end of a lever 20 engaged a desired socket hole in the frame. The knives 37 are carried in a frame 22 mounted on pivots 23 and extending forwardly over the bread table. The frame is lifted manually and its descent is cushioned by a pivoted dashpot. Upper and lower knife bars 28, 29, reciprocate in the frame 22 being provided with rearwardly extending guide bars and being reciprocated in opposite directions by cranks on a crankshaft 23. The knife bars are fitted with interengaging projections for mutual support. The knives 37 are parallel and each terminates at one end in a clip adapted to fit in a groove in the knife bar and provided with a threaded shank which passes through an aperture in the bar so that the knife can be firmly secured in the bar by tightening up a nut on the outer end of the shank. The outer ends of the knives are free but pass through guides 40. Blocks 41 are fitted at the sides of the table to position the loaves and also to prevent the end slices falling after cutting ; one of these blocks is adjustable. The crank-shaft is driven by an electromotor controlled by a switch which is automatically thrown out at the end of each cutting operation.
