Abstract
<PICT:0491739/III/1> The polymerization of liquid or dissolved initial materials is carried out on a moving band, the initial material being supplied to one end of the band and the polymer being removed from the other end. The band, which is preferably groove-shaped and may consist of thin steel, may be housed in a gas-tight chamber provided with a gas or vapour outlet pipe. In the apparatus shown, a housing 1 contains an endless steel band 4 mounted on rollers 2, 3 one or both of which is driven. A heating or cooling device may be provided around the band. The housing 1 is provided with inlet pipes 5, 6 for the initial materials situated adjacent one end of the band, and with a vapour outlet pipe 8. A scraper 7, preferably reciprocatable by an eccentric drive, engages the discharge end of the band. The polymer removed by the scraper passes to a kneading device 9, capable of being heated. A slide 10 enables the part of the housing 1 containing the device 9 to be cut off from the remainder of the housing in order that the polymer may be removed without interrupting the polymerization process. The treading device may be replaced by a worm conveyer which works the polymer and delivers it through orifices in the form of rods or tubes.ALSO:<PICT:0491739/IV/1> The polymerization of liquid or dissolved initial materials is carried out on a moving band, the initial material being supplied to one end of the band and the polymer being removed from the other end. The housing 1 is provided with inlet pipes 5, 6 for the initial materials situated adjacent one end of the band, and with a vapour outlet pipe 8. A scraper 7, preferably reciprocatable by an eccentric drive, engages the discharge end of the band. The polymer removed by the scraper passes to a kneading device, capable of being heated. A slide 10 enables the part of the housing 1 containing the device 9 to be cut off from the remainder of the housing in order that the polymer may be removed without interrupting the polymerization process. The kneading device may be replaced by a worm conveyer which works the polymer and delivers it through orifices in the form of rods or tubes. The apparatus may be employed for the polymerization of isobutylene, a mixture of liquefied isobutylene and liquefied ethylene being supplied through the pipe 5 and a solution of boron fluoride in liquefied ethylene through the pipe 6, or for the polymerization of vinyl isobutyl ether, a solution of the ether in propane being supplied through the pipe 6, and propane mixed with boron fluoride through the pipe 5.
