[Class 3 (ii)] A vehicle number-plate assembly comprises a backing plate, a plurality of digits, a plurality of spaced locating means adapted to space by the requisite distance any desired order of digits, each of said digits engaging the locating means at their upper and lower edges, and a member or members for securing the digits on the backing plate, such member or members covering the locating means from view when the number-plate is assembled. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, digits 11 are secured and located on a plate 10 by lugs 12 engaging in openings 16 formed in the inturned edges 15 of members 13 embracing the edges of the plate. Where the letters of the number plate are arranged in a row above the numerals as shown in Fig. 4, the upper and lower edges of the plate are provided with members 13 as above, and an additional strip 18 is provided having inturned edges 19, 21 formed with openings for receiving the lugs on the bottom of the letters and on the top of the numerals respectively. In a modification, Fig. 5, the lugs 12 engage in recesses 23 formed in strips 22 secured to the plate 10. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, lugs 26 on the digits engage in apertures 25 in the plate 10 and the digits are secured by channel members 13. Alternatively, lugs on the plate 10 engage in apertures formed in flanges at the top and bottom of the digits. Specification 466,113 is referred to.
