Abstract
491,483. Propelling aircraft. MERCIER, P. E. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1812. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1937. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXVII] The exhaust pipe 3 of aircraft-engine is progressively flattened up to its outlet 5, arranged parallel to the direction of travel, and has reverse bends 13, 14 which spread out the gases. The cross-sectional area is constant, or increases slightly towards the outlet, which may be curved laterally to follow the curvature of the cowling ; adjacent pipes may have a combined outlet. A baffle 7 injects cooling air into a chamber 6 round the pipe, the exit 8 being arranged so that the exhaust has an ejector action on the air, which is separated by a partition from the cylinder cooling air. Air for heating the cabin may be heated in a passage 12 surrounding the pipe 3 which is connected to the engine by a ball joint 4. Specification 489,076 is referred to.
