Abstract

554,768. Exhaust pipes ; cooling. MERCIER, P. E. March 30, 1942, No. 4245. Convention date, March 29, 1941. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] The exhaust of aircraft engines having cylinders 26 in line is cooled and led away from the'exhaust outlets 25 by conduits 1 provided on each cylinder and curved rearwardly as shown from a circular section over the outlet 25 to a flattened outlet 3, the forward surface 10 of the conduits being concaved at 9. The outlet lips at 3 are strengthened by channels 16, 17, one or both of which may receive, through apertures 20, the cooling-air flowing over the conduit, the air thus collected being led away through the channels to a heater in the fuselage, or to a jacket for heating the carburetter. The cooling-air is directed through a passage 23 formed between the conduit and a guide 22 attached to the channel 16, and may be drawn through the channels by the engine suction, or may be forced through the channels in the reverse direction. Baffles 31 are also provided for preventing the exhaust of one conduit from contacting with the guide 22 of the succeeding conduit. A ball connection 33 may be provided for the conduit to allow for expansion and to facilitate removal. Specification 491,483 is referred to.
