Abstract

491,130. Load-handling apparatus; lifting-jacks. STANHAY, Ltd., and GOLDUP, C. E. Nov. 29, 1937, No. 32855. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group I] Ploughs, cultivators and other agricultural machines are provided with a device for raising and lowering the tools consisting of a doubleacting piston connected to the tools, the cylinder being mounted on a tractor. One face of the piston is larger than the other, the tools being raised and lowered by compressed air acting on the larger and smaller faces of the piston respectively. Fig. 2 shows a cylinder 1 adapted to be mounted on a tractor and enclosing a piston 12 the effective area of the upper face of which is smaller than that of the lower face by reason of the large diameter of the piston rod 18. The upward movement of the piston is limited by a bolt 20. Compressed air is admitted to the two sides of the piston through ports 37, 38 and exhausted into the atmosphere through a port 42, the control being effected by a rotary valve 41. The valve 41 is rotated through a stem 32 which is connected to levers 69, 68 which are operated by a handle 67 shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The piston rod 18 is connected to the pivoted tool frame 59 by a yoke 53 the depending arms of which are jointed at 58 to the frame. The latter is pivoted' to the tractor so that it is raised as a whole when the piston 12 is raised. The supply of air is obtained from a compressor 71 which is driven by a belt from the crank-shaft of the tractor engine, the compressed air being conducted to a receiver 74 containing oil and led through a pipe 75 to the inlet 34 of the piston valve. The inlet 34 leads to the air chest 33 shown in Fig. 2, whence it passes to one side or the other of the piston according to the position of the valve 41.
