Abstract

490,863. Cable joints. BEAVER, C. J., DAVEY, E. L., and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. March 17, 1937, No. 7884. [Class 38 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] A joint packing 14 between a vessel 1 containing fluid under pressure and a closure member 7 therefor is protected by sealing material supplied by gravity to a channel 16 surrounding the joint from a reservoir 21 in the upper member. The sealing material, e.g. a viscous oil or compound or a metal or alloy having a low melting point is initially introduced into the reservoir 21 and flows after the joint 14 is made into the channel 16, heat being applied to the member 7 if necessary to liquefy the material. The invention may be applied to a joint sleeve 1 for high tension cables. The sleeve is filled to level 8 with oil or compound placed under pressure by gas supplied to a number of domes 7 from the interior of one of the cables.
