Abstract

490,580. Cleaning and polishing floors. ECKERT, A. Nov. 17, 1937, No. 31676. Convention date, Nov. 17, 1936. [Class 138 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In a vacuum cleaner an agitator comprises a member 3 carrying a beater plate 4 and having flanges 3a resting on a flexible plate 2, which is clamped between the two sections 1a, 1b of the suction hood. The member 3 is hinged by means of pins 1m, or otherwise, and when suction is applied to the space 1f, the member 3 rises, the lip 2 remaining in contact therewith. When the contact is broken, air enters the space 1f, and the plate 3 is forced downwards by springs 12, the action being repeated continuously. The plate 4 is formed with ribs 4a, with peripheral holes 4d, and with a central slot 4c communicating with the space 1f. A thread catcher 5 is pivoted in the slot 4c, being secured by webs 6. The space 1f communicates with a socket member 8 by means of a passage 1i in a pivot pin 1c. The socket 8 is held on the pin 1c by means of end caps 9, the socket being pressed on to the upper surface of the pin by means of a spring 10 at each end. For use in polishing, a brush is secured to the under surface of the plate 4. Steel wool may be applied to the brush. If the plate 4 is removed, the apparatus can be used for suction only. The under surface of the member 3 slopes . downwards from the hinge, as shown. An outer slide 7 has a bead 7a, engaging in one of three grooves in the hood, according as the apparatus is used with the plate 4, without the plate 4, or with a brush.
