Abstract
490,342. Feeding webs. FITZGERALD, A. S. Feb. 27, 1937, Nos. 35002 and 35003. Convention dates, Feb. 27, 1936 and Sept. 19, 1936. Divided out of 490,305. [Class 100 (i)] A web-feeding mechanism which is especially applicable for registering a web 210 provided with registering marks 226 in relation to the cutting knife of a packing machine is constructed with a pair of feed rollers 212, 213, which are geared together and comprise at least one roller (213) with a resilient surface, and means are provided for varying the pressure between the surfaces of the two rollers in order to vary the speed of the web 210. The marks 226 preferably operate in conjunction with a photo-sensitive electric control device as described in Specification 490,305, which rotates a worm wheel 234, Fig. 2, when variation in the rate of feed is necessary. The feed roller 212 is mounted in fixed bearings and driven intermittently by Geneva gearing, and the roller 213 is mounted at each end in movable bearings 222, 223, which are moved against the action of a spring 236 by screw-mechanism to cause the web to be gripped with the desired pressure. The bearings 222 effect the automatic control of the feed, and are moved under control of the wheel 234 which rotates a screwed sleeve 233 engaging a screw bolt with a head 231 acting on the bearing 222. The bearing 222 is guided in a slotted yoke by means of pins 228. The bearing 223 can be adjusted manually by operating a lever 251 which is maintained normally in a vertical position by a spring-plunger 246 which engages a flat part on a sleeve 241 provided with a screw threaded portion 243 which engages a fixed thread to cause the sleeve to move quickly when the lever 251 is rotated. The lever can be rotated to a slight extent in either direction and is then arrested by stops. This permits the web to be slowed down or speeded up to secure an initial registration of the cutting knife with the web, and the register is thereafter maintained automatically. The sleeve 241 is fitted with a screw 240 which is set by hand initially and locked in position by a lock nut 242. This determines the normal pressure of the roller 213. The roller 213 can be moved away from the roller 212 to permit of threading of the web.
