489,963. Making envelopes. DICKINSON & CO., Ltd., J. Feb. 8, 1937, No. 3654. Convention date, March 5, 1936. [Class 94 (ii)] An envelope-making machine comprises a transfer means for envelope blanks including a run of mechanism R, R<1> for advancing blanks in an overlapping band formation E and means T, R<11> for acting directly on the overlapping band to remove blanks seriatim in a sidewise direction to individualize the same. Envelope blanks E, in fanned-out relationship, with sealing flaps 10 unfolded, are delivered by the drier M<1> to a belt 19 wherewith a holddown bar 24 and rollers 25 ... 30 co-operate. Roller 31 now feeds the blanks to a faster running belt 21, whereby the blanks E are fanned out more, stops 33, 33x limiting the travel and causing the blanks to pile up one upon the other to form a " clearance stack." A cam-operated suction picker T, oscillated and reciprocated from the main shaft of the machine, lifts the top blank by one corner thereof and feeds it into the bite of belts 36, 37 disposed at right-angles to the previous detection of feed 19, 20. The shaft of the top roll 39 of the pair 38, 39 is adjustable to form a taper bite into which the blank is fed by feed sectors 84<x>. The upstanding sealing flaps 11, Fig. 2, are now folded on to the envelopes by a folding bar and the envelopes are restacked by mechanism M<11>. Rollers 42 carried by spring-biassed carriages bear upon the envelopes while between the belts 36, 37. A manual device is provided whereby, for operating upon different sized blanks, the shafts operating the belt system 36, 37 and the transfer suction picker T may be adjusted as desired.
