Abstract

489,299. Colour photography. MURRAY, H. D., and SPENCER, D. A. Jan. 22, 1937, No. 2016. [Class 98 (ii)] Exposed photographic material of the kind having one or more photographic layers on each side of the support is colour developed with two different colour developing solutions by applying to one side a coating layer of one of the colour developing solutions which has been thickened by the addition to it of sufficient thickening agent to render it highly viscous when in position on the material or to render it capable of being set to a gel on cooling, and by applying to the other side a coating layer of the other colour developer solution which has been thickened in a similar manner, leaving the coatings in position for sufficient time for them .to develop the images in the photographic layers and then removing the coatings. Suitable thickening agents are gelatine, glue, gums, and boiled starch. In an example, a film bearing on each side a hardened gelatine layer containing a silver colour component image produced by exposure, development, fixing, washing, and drying is bleached in a bath containing potassium ferricyanide and sodium chloride, which converts the images to silver chloride. The images may also be bleached to silver bromide. The film is washed and surface moisture removed by a current of air. The bleached images are rendered developable by exposure to light. The coating of colour developer thickened with gelatine may be applied warm to one side by rollers, and allowed to cool or chilled, and a coating of a different colour developer is applied to the other side. The layers may be left in position from 4 to 6 minutes, and then removed by washing in or spraying with warm water or by scrapers or by a rotating wheel. The developed silver is removed with Farmer's reducer. The coating layer may be highly viscous instead of being allowed to set. Colour developing formulµ are given, and may include ethyl glycol and diethanolamine. Colour formers referred to are 1: 5-dihydroxynaphthalene, 1 : 3-diphenyl - 5 - pyrazolone, 1 - p - nitrophenyl - 3 - methyl-5-pyrazoloiie, 1-phenyl-3-furyl-5-pyrazolone, alpha-chlor-acetoacet-p-toluidide, and p-nitrophenylacetonitrile. The process may be applied to a film having two layers on one side of the support and one or two layers on the other side of the support. The process may be applied to an exposed film that has not been developed and bleached. Specifications 308,803, [Class 98 (ii)], and 420,356 are referred to.
