Abstract

489,176. Moulding sliding-clasp fasteners. CORNER, G. H. C., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 20, 1937, No. 1754. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXV] For the manufacture of sliding-clasp fasteners there are used strips of integrally connected elements formed by moulding or casting or plastic deformation of plastic non-metallic material. The strip of integrally connected elements shown in Fig. 3, is formed in the drum mould shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the moulding recesses comprising portions 2 to form the interlocking projection parts 3 and portions 5 to form the leg or base parts 6 ; the segmental covers 9 have core projections 10 to form the usual interlocking recesses in the elements and have channels 14 by which the moulding material fed through axial and radial ducts 12, 13 passes to the moulding recesses 2, 5. The drum has steamheating and water-cooling passages. When the moulding is completed the cover segments 9 are moved away, the material indicated at 17 as arising from the channel 14 is trimmed off, and the strip of elements integrally connected at their leg portions is pulled off the drum. The drum recesses may be helically arranged so that a long length of integrally connected elements is obtained; the arrangement in this case may be such that the longitudinal edges of the strips are connected and that the connected strips are removable in the form of a cylinder convenient for storage, the strip of elements, when required, being obtained by a cutting action as in screw cutting. A strip of elements connected as shown in Fig. 6, may be obtained by the injection mould shown in Fig. 5. The strip of elements may be obtained by the action of heated dies on a strip of material.
