Abstract
489,146. Recording and reproducing sound; variable-speed gearing. TIELAND, J. H. Dec. 2, 1937, No. 33415. Convention date, Dec. 7, 1936. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A turntable is rotated at a speed dependent on the position of the needle in its path, e.g. at a constant linear speed, by a constant speed motor driving a differential gear of which one secondary shaft is connected to the turntable and the other to a speed governor. The motor 1, drives, by a worm 2, a differential casing 3 within which are secondary bevels 8, 9 on shafts 10, 11. Shaft 11 drives, through gearing 19, 21, and a flexible coupling 23, the turntable shaft 24. At the top of this shaft a worm 35 drives a further shaft 36 which, through bevel gearing and threaded rod provides the sideways movement of the recording stylus support 29. The other secondary shaft of the differential gear drives, through worm gear 18, 20, a governor 27 having its speed control disc 28 of special cross section increasing towards the centre. The brake block 43 of the governor is moved towards the centre of its disc as the stylus moves towards the centre of the record by means of racks 38, 42 and pinions 39, 41. Thus as the stylus approaches the centre of the reoord the governor speed decreases and, by the action of the differential, the turntable speed increases. The turntable shaft is mounted in a tapered bearing 44 to provide sufficient friction to balance the initial braking action of block 43.
