Abstract

Speed, regulating.-Relates to sound-recording or reproducing machines in which a constant speed of the record-groove under the stylus may be obtained, or in which the turntable may .run at a constant angular velocity when required for the manufacture or use of ordinary records. According to the invention, there is provided on the tone-arm 1 a toothed segment 19 engaging a rack 17, which is connected by a lever 15 to a strip 11 having a tapered end 14. This end coacts with the brake-lever 9 of the centrifugal governor of the motor so as to increase the speed as the tone-arm moves across the turntable, the acceleration being such that the linear speed of the surface engaging the stylus remains constant, Means are provided for disengaging the rack 17 from the segment when a constant angular speed is required. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the strip 11 is interposed between the end of the upper arm of the brake lever 9 and the regulating screw 10. A modification is described in which the, tapered strip co-operates with a screw fixed in the outer arm of the brake-lever, which lever is controlled by a spring. In this construction, in addition to the provision of means for disengaging the toothed rack from the segment on the tone-arm, transmission of movement of the tone-arm to the strip 11 may be interrupted by the withdrawal, by means of a lever 24, Fig. 6, of the pivot 22 of the lever 15. This lever is then freely supported in a bracket 23.
