Abstract

4121. Oulton, G., Ablett, C., and Lightfoot, W. E. Feb. 24. Brakes.-Relates to means for gradually and constantly varying the speed of the turntable of machines for recording and reproducing sounds, so as to produce practically constant linear speed of the record, the means being controlled either by the sound-box carrier as in Specification No. 24,078, A.D. 1907, or by the motor itself, and in either case being capable of being thrown out so as to permit the speed to be controlled in the usual manner when varying linear speed is required. Fig. 2 shows the mechanism from underneath. The tube 15 slides outside the rod 12 and carries a projection 18, which bears against the arm 11 of the brake lever, pivoted at 9, of which the other arm bears against the friction disk 16 of the governor. The screw 19 is driven from the motor and traverses the half-nut 24 attached to the projection 18. By turning the milled head 16, over-rotation of which is prevented by the finger 25, the nut 24 can be disengaged from the screw ; the projection 18, which being arcshaped remains in contact with the arm 11, is then free to be moved longitudinally to the correct starting position, which may be found from graduations corresponding to different record-diameters on the part 15, on to which a pointer attached to the casing projects. Or the tube 15 may be pushed right in to stop the machine. The arm 11 may alternatively slide in a boss on the spindle 9, and be pivoted to the slide piece and nose 18 ; and a scroll may be used instead of the screw 19. Fig. 5 shows how the sound-box carrier may move the sliding projection 18 through mechanism such as is described in the above-mentioned Specification. The rod 30 moved by the sound-arm engages the spring-controlled bell-crank lever 36, 31 attached to the sliding piece.
