Abstract

766,560. Magnetic rewriting and reproducing apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 20, 1955 [Jan. 20, 1954], No. 1667/54. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXIV]. Sound reproducing and recording apparatus, using a record in the form of a pliant disc coated with a suitable magnetic material, is provided with gearing giving a slow forward speed and a relatively fast reverse speed (see Group XXIV). The apparatus comprises a turn-table 3, Fig. 1, a circular tracking disc 6, a magnetic transducing head 5 at the end of an arm 4 and a microphone in a casing 18 including controls 19, 20 for the forward-reverse gear. The apparatus, which is substantially similar to that described in Specification 697,161 includes a loud-speaker 8, and a scale 11 cooperating with a pointer attached to the arm 4 of the transducing head 5 to indicate the amount of recording time available on a particular record. A rotatable member 13 defines the outermost position of the arm 4, in the manner described in Specification 697,165. A pressbutton 14 combined with the member 13 is effective to energize a buzzer housed in the cabinet 1 of the apparatus to actuate a switch so that an audible tone is recorded to indicate, for example, that a correction is to be made when the recorded matter is transcribed. Headphones may be connected to a socket 17 and used in place of the loud-speaker 8. The apparatus may be used to record a message received from a telephone line, or for reproducing a recorded message into a telephone line, and a control 10 is provided for this purpose. The turntable 3 is driven from an electric motor 35, Fig. 2, having a stepped driving spindle 41, 42, the larger step 42 of which drives for the slow forward speed through a friction idler 44 fast with an idler 45 to the inner flange 24 of two concentric circular flanges 24, 25 beneath the turn-table 3. To obtain the relatively fast reverse drive for back spacing of the arm 4 on the magnetic disc, the smaller step 41 of the driving spindle engages a friction idler 54 which engages the outer flange 25. The engagement of the idler wheels 45, 54 with their respective flanges and the engagement of a brake 62 with the turn-table is effected electromagnetically. In a modification, Fig. 4, the electric motor (not shown), drives through toothed gears 102, 108 and a friction wheel 109 to a friction idler 110 which is engageable with either the inner flange 24 or the outer flange 25 on the turn-table 3. To give an additional speed, a two-speed electric motor may be used. Specifications 702,345, 704,175, 739,295, [Group XXXIV], and 744,922, [Group XXIV], also are referred to.
