Abstract

489,031. Sponge rubber; agglutinated fibrous materials. TALALAY, J. A. Dec. 8, 1936, Nos. 33634/36 and 7600/37. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Sept. 14, 1937.] [Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Spongy masses of rubber reinforced with fibrous material and suitable for example for use as upholstery filling are made by causing a dispersion or solution of rubber or the like to extend itself as a foam under the action of pressure reduction through the interstices of a bulky fibrous mass having its fibres bonded or locked together and then causing the rubber to set whilst permeating the fibrous mass. Fibres specified are hog hair and horsehair, cellulose fibre, asbestos, coconut fibre, wool, cotton &c. The fibres may be bonded together by an adhesive such as a rubber dispersion, casein, gelatine and rosin ; adhesives such as gelatine or rosin may be subsequently removed by means of a suitable solvent. Alternatively the fibres may be locked together in the form of a felt or a woven or knitted fabric with or without an adhesive. The foam may be produced by the processes described in Specification 455,138. The rubber dispersion may be prefrothed. The impregnated fibrous mass may be subjected to a carding operation before setting and subsequently moulded ; or moulded articles may be produced directly. Any tendency for the bonded or locked fibres to rise with the foam may be prevented by mechanically retaining the position of the fibrous structure in the mould. This may be effected for example (a) by entirely filling the mould with the fibrous mass, (b) by passing wires across the mould, (e) by providing spikes, needles or the like projecting from the mould wall as shown in Fig. 2, (d) by providing blocks 14 in the mould as shown in Fig. 5, which form cavities in the finished structure, or (e) if the fibrous material is in sheet form it may be bent into sinuous form the loops of which may be filled with the fibrous material. Specifications 341,936 and 484,798 also are referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 preformed froth may be merely poured on to the bonded or locked fibres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 468,861.
