Abstract
488,819. Shot-gun cartridges. WADE, A. July 26, 1937, No. 29939. [Class 9 (i)] The shot and propellent charges are separated by two axially-spaced air spaces which are connected by passages, whereby, at the initial stage of combustion, air will pass from the space nearer the shot to the space nearer the propellent. In the construction shown, the propellent 6 of moulded cylindrical form is contained in a thin metal case 2, extending beyond the end of the charge 6 so as to provide an air space 10 which is closed bv a cardboard disc 12 formed with a serrated edge. Between this disc and the shot charge a second air space 11 is enclosed by a cardboard cup 13, the end of which in contact with the disc 12 is provided with a central aperture 15 and radial ribs 14. The other end of the cup member is also formed with a central aperture which is closed by a gas-check disc 17, and exterior radial ribs may be provided similar to the ribs 14. The propellent charge 6 is formed with a number of longitudinal apertures 7 affording air spaces which govern the rate of combustion, and also provide a means by which the weight of the charge may be varied without alteration of its external dimensions.
