Description

Sept. 25, 1923. 1,468,822
E. LUDORF PROJECTILE AND MEANS TO FIRE THE SAME Filed Aug. 6. 1920 Patented Sept. 25, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST LUDORF, OF BERLIN-TREPTOW, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM PILUM A. G., O]? BERNE, SWITZERLAND.
YROJECTILE AND MEANS T0 FIRE THE SAME.
Application filed August 6, 1920. Serial No. 401,745.
T 0 all whom it may concem Be it known that I, ERNST LUDORF, a citi- Zen of the German Republic, of Berlin- Treptow. Defreggerstrasse No. 20, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Projectile and Means to Fire the Same, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a projectile which needs less space and possesses less weight and which may be made at a lower price as the cartridges, etc., known heretofor.
I attain the said object by forming the bullet integral with the shell containing the propelling charge. the cartridge case being dispensed with.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described. illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through a projectile.
Fig. 2 shows in a diagrannnatical way electrical means for firing the projectile Shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a modified construction of the projectile shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the projectile shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section on line ab of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail. partly in elevation and partly in section. of the electrical firing means shown in Fig. 2.
The projectile shown in Fig. 1 comprises a jacket 1 having a head 2 and a core 3 Within said head 2. The inner wall of the jacket 1 is tapering and the thickness of the wall which is about equal to the thickness of the head at its fore end diminishes gradually toward the hind end of the jacket. At the hind end the jacket 1 is closed by a bot.- tom 6 made of thin sheet metal with a low melting point. The bottom 6 is joined to the jacket 1 by means of a ring T of celluloid, or similar material which is easily ignited. At the hind end the jacket 1 is provided with a collar 8 which serves as a driving band. The propelling charge 9 is arranged between the bottom (3 and the disk 5 arranged within the jacket.
The new projectile may be provided with a. percussion cap as shown in .Figs. 2, 3 and l and may be tired by means of a tiring pin as used in the well known rifles. The projectile (Fig. 2) is provided with a three-armed bridge 26 in the centre of which the cap 28 is placed. The arms 29 have triangular cross-section as shown in Fig. 4, the arms have an edge pointed to the interior of the jacket in such a. manner that they do not offer great resistance to the gases escaping from the jacket 1 between the arms 29.
The bottom of the projectile may be made of paper or any other material which is easily inflammable and the circuit may be closed in close proximity to said bottom and by such means which when bearing current are heated to stab degree that the said bot.- tom and therefrom the propelling charge or a lighting charge is ignited.
That I wish to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cartridge comprising a head, ajacket integral with the head and projecting rearardly therefrom. a core in the head. a disc in the jacket and bearing against the core, a propelling charge in the jacket and a closure in the breech of the jacket, and a ring of material which has a low melting point, securing the closure in place.
In witness whereof I affix my signature.
ERNST LUDORF.
