Abstract
488,520. Directive wireless signalling. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 3, 1937, No. 30147. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] Relates to directive wireless arrays of the kind in which a number of half-wave radiators 1 separated by insulators IN are arranged in substantially the same line and are associated with a similar " line " of radiators 2, spaced approximately half a wavelength away. According to the invention, vertical connecting wires 3, 4 between the two " lines " are provided with coupling " bridges " 7, 8 which are symmetrically arranged on each side of the centre for adjusting the current and phase relations in the radiators. The array is fed from a source 5, through an impedance-matching circuit 6, and a mid-point tapping to the middle pair of conductors 3<1>, 4<1>, and then by co-phasial energization of the other radiators. The bridging strips 7, 8 are located at voltage nodes, so that the wires 3, 4 do not radiate, and need not be insulated from the antennae 1, 2. The tuning effect of the strips 7, 8 may be used to offset irregularities in the insulation and spacing of the two sets of radiators, and also to adjust the array to receive a wide range of wavelengths. The average distance between the " lines " 1, 2 is preferably seventenths of the working wavelength.
