Abstract

Hollow filaments are prepared by extruding a solution of an organic derivative of cellulose in a volatile medium through a jet into a cell into which a current of evaporative medium at a raised temperature is introduced in the vicinity of the jet, the total quantity of evaporative medium flowing through the cell being such that the solvent concentration of the outgoing medium is at least 1 per cent by volume, and the volume of evaporative medium introduced in the vicinity of the jet being at least 40 per cent of that of the total evaporative medium. The temperature of the jet evaporative medium is preferably at least 40 DEG C. higher than the boiling point of the solvent constituent of the spinning solution, and the temperature of the spinning solution in the jet is preferably just below that at which blebbing occurs. The jet evaporative medium may constitute 60, 75 or 90 per cent or even the whole of the total evaporative medium, and may be introduced at the plane of the jet face or on either side of said plane and is preferably directed towards the filaments. Vapours of organic non-solvents, solvents, or swelling agents may be present in the jet evaporative medium. Specifications 300,998, 320,632, 325,233, [all in Class 2 (ii)], and 399,795 are referred to.
