Abstract
<PICT:0791468/IV (a)/1> Artificial filaments are made from cellulose triacetate by a process wherein a solution of the triacetate is dry-spun through a spinneret in which the orifices are arranged in groups, the individual members of each group being spaced so closely that the filaments formed thereby coalesce to give composite filaments having a substantially homogeneous structure, and the groups themselves being sufficiently far apart to prevent coalescence between the composite filaments formed. High-tenacity products are obtained. As shown, the orifices 26 are arranged in closely adjacent pairs 27, the pairs being well separated one from another. The orifices may also be arranged in groups of three. The solvent for the cellulose triacetate may be methylene chloride or chloroform, alone or in admixture with up to about 20 per cent by volume of a lower aliphatic alcohol, e.g. methanol, ethanol, a propanol or a butanol. The composite filaments may have a denier of 0.6-20.
