Abstract

488,045. Pistons. MOTOR RESEARCH CORPORATION. April 26, 1937, No. 11880. Convention date, Jan. 22. [Class 122 (i)] A piston comprises a pair of skirt sections 17 resiliently connected to the head and compressed one toward the other by a relatively inextensible band or bands 19, 19b, pre-stressed at temperatures less than operating temperatures. The skirt sections are connected by resilient webs 18 to tugs depending from the head and carrying the bosses 13. The bands are cast in the skirt sections and coated, except at the anchorage points 19a with a lubricant to prevent adhesion and permit relative sliding movement of the skirt and bands. After casting, a tool is inserted through holes in the skirt to deform the band at 19d thereby stressing it and soft metal rivets 25 are subsequently inserted to maintain the band in stressed condition.
