Abstract

488,001. Twisting wires together. HOFFMANN, E. Nov. 10, 1937, No. 30875. [Class 83 (iv)] In a bale-tying machine a tensioning device and a twisting pinion are mechanically coupled and operated by a single lever to effect simultaneously the tensioning and twisting. The ends of the wire are gripped by a clamp 3 on a lever 2 and a clamp 4 on a lever 21. The wires pass through a slotted pinion 5 rotated by a gear train from a shaft 7a carrying a lever 8. The lever 8 is swung to rock the shaft 7a and attached cams 9 act on rollers 10 to push the levers apart and tension the wire and simultaneously rotate the pinion to effect the twisting. The lever 8 then engages a pin 15 on a lever 13 to thrust it on to a cutter 12 which is depressed to shear the wire. When the lever 8 is released a spring 31 raises the cutter. The machine is then placed on another package and the lever 8 is rocked in the opposite direction to tension and twist the wire. When the lever 8 reaches the end of its stroke it engages a lug on a lever 14 which depresses the lever 13 to again actuate the cutter.
