Abstract

213.787. Gerrard, A. J. May 1, 1923. Wire strainers.-In an apparatus for wiring bales, movement of a lever in one direction actuates the tensioning means, whilst movement in the reverse direction actuates both the twisting and cutting means. One end of the binding wire is bent back on itself slightly and is held in a slanting recess 46, whilst the other end, after the wire has passed through the slotted twisting pinion, around the bale and again through the pinion is secured between serrated clamp elements 48, both of the anchoring means being formed at the ends of arms 36 pivoted at 38 and normally drawn together towards each other by a spring 40, Fig. 2. The arms are moved away from one another by the rotation of cams 11, 12 about a shaft 9, the cams acting on rollers 42 formed on lugs or projections 36a from the arms. An annular gear wheel 13 is housed within a circumferential recess in the outer face of the cams 11, 12, these members being in the form of flanges on discs that are bolted together and are free to rotate on shaft 9. A locking dog engages a recess 35 in the gear wheel 13 to prevent movement thereof during the rotation of an actuating lever 18 in the direction C, Fig. 1, the lever 18 comprising a yoke 19 straddling the cams and carrying a lug 20<a> engaging a portion of the cam face to rotate them and to strain the wire. The yoke is pinned to the shaft 9 at 21, Fig. 2, and the shaft carries a pin 22 coacting with a lug 23 on the internal face of the cam 12 to assist in the rotation thereof. When the lever has been rotated approximately 180‹ from the position shown in Fig. 1, a pin 45 on the cam 11 acts upon the catch 32 to withdraw it from the recess in the gear wheel 13. On the commencement of the return stroke of the lever, spring-pressed pawls 26 carried on the yoke 19 engage a pair of recesses in the periphery of the wheel, so that the latter is rotated to rotate the slotted pinion 14, formed on a slotted shaft 20, through which pass the two portions of the binding wire to be twisted together. Further rotation of the lever causes the pawls 26 to stroke the catch 32, whereby the catch is again pressed into the recess in the gear wheel and the pawls are withdrawn from their recesses. Subsequently a pin 56 on the yoke 19 strikes a pivoted cutter 51 to depress the same and sever the spare wire, a spring 57 restoring the cutter, and a spring 34 restoring the cams.
