Abstract
221,771. Cary Manufacturing Co., (Assignees of Weeks, C. S.). Sept. 13, 1923, [Convention date]. Wire strainers having separate levers for tensioning and for securing wires around bales &c. The levers are arranged so that either holds the apparatus in place during actuation of the other, and means are provided for holding the wire under tension before the operations of securing the wire and cutting-off the spare ends are performed, such means being separate from those used to place the tension on the wire. The tensioning means comprise a shaft B, rotated by a lever L and carrying at its opposite ends lugs J, K to which are secured anchoring devices M, N respectively, for the ends of the binding wire. The device M, Figs. 6 and 9, includes a spring- pressed pivoted pawl m biting into the wire, which may be pre-deformed near one end as shown, and the other device N, Fig. 5, comprises a pin n around which the wire is wound. The wire is passed from the clamp M, Fig. 9, across a plate F having a curved guide edge, or a guide roller F<2>. through shearing plates D, E and the slotted pinion C, around the bale, again through the plates D, E and pinion and across a second curved guide plate H and secured to the other clamp N. Intermediate between the clamp M and plate D and between the plate E and clamp N are fixed the means for retaining the tension on the wire, comprising a horizontally rotatable spring-pressed pivoted pawl G, Fig. 1, having a serrated edge, and a vertically rotatable spring- pressed pawl 1, Fig. 5, respectively. The wire is passed between these pawls and the plates coacting therewith and the tensioning lever L is swung upwardly and forwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 until sufficient tenion is put on the wire, whereupon the lever is swung back to its original position, the pawls G, I meanwhile maintaining the tension on the wire. The operator thereupon presses down the lever L with one hand to give a good bearing whilst rotating the other lever P with the other hand. This lever is secured to a gear segment 0 to actuate the slotted pinion C to twist the wires together, and carries a cross-bar r which actuates spring- pressed pivoted cutter blades Q, R to sever the spare ends of the wire. After the lever P is restored to the position shown in Fig. 1, pressure thereon similarly affords a good bearing during the rotation of the tensioning lever.
