[Class 45] In a wire-straining, fastening, and severing machine for packages, the forward movement of the hand lever 13 partly rotates a block 14 and straightens a toggle 25 to force outwardly a pair of levers 20 carrying at their free ends tensioning levers 21 one having a wire grip 22 forcing the wire against a fixed post and the other terminating in a clamp. A coiled spring 35 attached to tension-adjusting members 36 provided with rollers 38 tends to draw the rear ends of the levers 21 towards each other and, in order to equalize the tension during operation, the rollers run in guides 39 formed on the levers. The block 14 loose on shaft 12 is partly rotated by the hand lever through the medium of automatically engaging and disengaging pawls and, by means of a cable 29, pulls forward a slide carrying the pivot pin 26 and so straightens the toggle to strain the wire. On the return stroke pawls carried by the block engage the gear wheel 17 and drive it to operate the twisting pinion 18 and finally lugs on the operating-lever press cutters 19 forward to sever the wire and rock a cam 33 to break the toggle.
