Abstract

487,498. Roof - supports for mines. FISHER, O., and SMITHSON, H. F. Dec. 21, 1936, No. 35057. [Class 20 (ii)] Roof-supporting means at road junctions and crossings in mines, comprise a principal beam or beams supported by stilt devices as described in Specification 460,844, and cross - beams on the principal beams, or arched beams with their ends resting on the principal beam. In one form, as shown in Fig. 1, for a crossing, two principal beams c having depending legs e are frictionally supported between stilts k, l, the friction being adjusted by clamping plates n, o, and packing m between the legs and stilts, as described in Specification 483,917. The principal beams are arranged in the entrances to the transverse passages b, and carry transverse beams d to support the main passage roof. The stilts are supported by a framework g, h, which prevents upheaval of the floor during subsidence of the roof. In another form, as shown in Fig. 2, for a road junction, a single main beam u, supported as previously described, is positioned in the entrance to the side passage p and the main passage is supported by arched beams s, t, supported by guides and clamps as described in Specification 460,844, upon upstanding stilt portions from ground bearers v. The free ends of the arched beams t are secured to the principal beam u.
